Xin Zhao

Dr. Xin Zhao received her BSc. in Bioengineering from South China Normal University, China, in 2005. She got her MSc with Distinction in Biomedical Engineering from Imperial College London, UK in 2006 and PhD in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering from University College London, UK in 2010. She was awarded the prestigious Dorothy Hodgkins Postgraduate Award from the UK Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) and Central Research Fund from University of London to support her graduate study. From 2012-2015, Dr. Zhao worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard University, Harvard-MIT Health Science & Technology (HST) under supervision of Prof. Ali Khademhosseini and School of Engineering of Applied Sciences (SEAS) under supervision of Prof. David Weitz.  She is now appointed as an associate professor at China’s leading university, Xian Jiaotong University.

Dr. Zhao’s research focuses on Biomaterials for Translational Regenerative Medicine. To address practical clinical problems, she works extensively with medical doctors from Eastman Dental Institute from UK, Mass General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital from US, and the affiliated hospitals from Shanghai Jiaotong University and Xian Jiaotong University. She has lead or participated in several cutting-edge multi-disciplinary research projects bridging biomaterials and medicine. These include "tumor tissue-sensitive drug carriers" funded by National Science Foundation of China (NSFC), "injectable and degradable bone cement" funded by UK EPSRC, "photo-crosslinkable hydrogel platforms for construction of artificial skin" funded by US Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation (EFRI) and  "microfluidics assisted construction of human mesenchymal stem cell laden hydrogel microspheres and their in vitro and in vivo osteogenic potential" funded by National Science Foundation (NSF) of US.

So far, she has published over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and applied for 1 national patent. Her work has been published in leading journals of the biomaterials field such as Advanced Functional Materials, Materials Today, Biomaterials, Small, Advanced Healthcare Materials, Acta Biomaterialia, Journal of Materials Chemistry B, etc, with one selected as the journal cover for Small and two for Journal of Materials Chemistry B. She also serves as a reviewer for Acta Biomaterialia and a guest editor for Plastic and Aesthetic Research.
